Substance Abuse Professional

The United States Department of Transportation regulations mandate that an individual who works under these regulations, and tests positive on a Federal Drug Test, must complete the SAP Process.

The process includes the following:

1-initial assessment by a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional

2-referral to education and/or treatment

3- return-to-duty assessment and

4-follow-up drug testing program.

Choosing a Substance Abuse Professionalis the major decision point
(and in some cases the only decision point) an employer may have in choosing whether or
not to place an employee behind the steering wheel of a school bus, in the cockpit of a plane,
at the helm of an oil tanker, at the throttle of a train, in the engineer compartment of a subway car,
or at the emergency control valves of a natural gas pipeline.

A SAP may not advocate for neither the employer nor the employee.
“The primary function is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally
evaluating the employee and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment
(“Why will I be referred?”), follow-up tests, and aftercare.

Companies that have employees regulated under the Department of Transportation
must have a policy specifically for regulated employees.

Our experienced staff meet the criteria of Substance Abuse Professional.
Our staff also are able to meet your needs for other DOT regulated services,

and Third Party Administrators and SAP Networks to ensure public safety is at the
forefront of each DOT SAP Return-to-Duty process. Mike Kirkeberg at Choicepoint Partnerships, LTD
also has the ability to contract directly with companies in need of outsourcing the return-to-duty process.
